This is one experiment I did and found worth discussing here.
I tried a website called skill sync.
I added my fake resume as ” Neeta Awasthy completed her Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI), Kanpur, and later pursued her Masters and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. Neeta Awasthy started her academic career as a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering at HBTI, Kanpur, and later joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Delhi as a faculty member. She has also served as the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at HBTI, Kanpur, and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Gautam Buddha University, Greater Noida. Currently, Neeta Awasthy is serving as the Director Apart from her academic and administrative roles, Neeta Awasthy is also actively involved in research and has published several research papers in national and international journals. She is a member of various professional bodies and has also served as an expert member of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).”
and a possible job description as: “
Associate Director – Learning and Content Design at Wadhwani Foundation” with a job description as
“Will be responsible for researching, collating, creating, and maintaining high-quality learning curricula to achieve the goals of increasing awareness, knowledge, and skills of government officials in myriad domains of technology and policy, with a special focus on new-age technology. Our ideal candidate is an experienced professional with demonstrable Curriculum and Instructional Design skills for Virtual and Digital learning as well as content development. The candidate should perform well under pressure and be analytical and detail-oriented. Additional advantages would be a technology background and/or experience with working on technology learning domains, as well as experience with working with the Government Sector.”
The outcome was amazing. See what the dashboard says:
It is giving a score of 36 out of a total of 100, whereas suggesting that you should not apply unless the score is 80. It is suggestive that you match the keywords so that the match is more than 80. After all, during screening, there will be yet another Natural Language Bot that is scanning the resumes.
Here is a simple trick. The word match. The bot checks the keywords in the Job Description and tries to find the same in the resume. All you have to do is to add those keywords to qualify the search.
It is funny to note that the bot was trying to find Associate Director in the resume, whereas the candidate has been a director for the last 15 years. Though, it is understood that holding a Ph.D. degree is the ultimate education one can have.
I found skillsyncer great! But, as with any other service, it is not free. Still, it is good enough to give you a hang of how to align your resume to the given Job Description or the role context.
Finally, it is to be understood, that the same resume should not be sent for all job descriptions and every resume vs Job description should be handled uniquely.
