“Attention Deficit: Aprosexia” is a combination of the prefix “a,” indicating “lack of,” and “prosexia,” which translates to “attention.” Essentially, aprosexia denotes a deficiency or incapacity to focus attention or attention disorders.

What is Aprosexia

The correlation between sleep disorders and attention deficits has been extensively explored in medicine. Initially, the term “aprosexia” emerged to denote the link between nasal obstructions, sleep disturbances, and subsequent cognitive challenges during wakefulness.

I was in my Placement Masterclass. I was with my students elaborating on the problems faced by the students, which refrained them from performing their best in the tests and interviews. The problems ranged from locational, to economical to confidence to speak. But as we approached the last 50 minutes of the class, the term “Inability to focus” came into the picture. They could not focus for more than 6 minutes at a time as many distractions and thoughts filled their brain space at the same time.

Causes of Aprosexia

This term gained prominence in the late 19th century when Dr. Guye, associated with the University of Amsterdam, presented a paper titled “On Aprosexia: The Inability to Pay Attention and Other Brain Function Disorders Caused by Nasal Conditions.”

Nasal Disorders

It was Dr. Guye in 1889 who specifically coined the term “aprosexia” to describe memory deficits and an inability to concentrate for extended periods, primarily stemming from nasal obstructions. His research predominantly focused on children and young students.

Around the same time, William Hill also concluded that breathing difficulties lay at the root of some children’s intellectual disabilities. Guye attributed aprosexia to physiological causes, positing that brain fatigue resulted from nasal disorders.

In contrast, Hill argued that nasal obstructions didn’t directly cause attention difficulties. Instead, these obstructions disrupt sleep, leading to reduced daytime alertness and energy levels, consequently affecting attention.

These studies show that Nasal disorders lead to poor sleep and poor sleep leads to Brain disorders and one of them is “Aproxesia”.

UV and Blue Lights

Another cause of “Aprosexia” is exposure to UV lights in the environment and UV lights from screens. We are always onscreen from TV to monitor, to laptops, to mobile phones, and many other huge billboards and the smallest of smart-watches. This much exposure causes this attention deficit.

HyperActivity

ADHD or Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity Disorder. Generally found in children, it moves to high-energy professional adults who perform very well in the profession. They can fall sick but they would never under-perform as a habit.

These adults enjoy life more than it is. Even a three-hour boring drive can cause an adrenalin rush in them and may cause sleepless nights.

Cure for Aprosexia

The cure is to reduce the racing thoughts, reduce overthinking be less excited, and reduce overthinking. The best part is, that we do not know what is the cause and what is the effect.

Still, writing down the racing thoughts at night, reducing overthinking, taking things as they come naturally, and not trying to steer the conditions can be a few things one can do to improve “Attention Deficit”. Using soulful music to sleep will certainly help.

Finally, our age-old, meditation comes in handy when nothing works. Meditation and calming the mind can work wonders to focus better, improve attention, and avoid aprosexia.
